Online microphone test

Speak and watch the bar move. If it does, your browser is picking up your voice, which is what a call from the browser needs. If it doesn’t, the test tells you why and how to fix it on your device. The sound never leaves your computer: nothing is recorded or uploaded.

This browser doesn't support choosing an output device. The tone plays through the system default.

How it works

  1. 1

Press “Start microphone test” and allow microphone access when your browser asks.

  2. 2

Speak normally. The level bar should move and turn green: the browser hears you.

  3. 3

No movement? Pick another input in the list (a headset, the built-in microphone) and try again.

  4. 4

Play the test tone to check your speaker or headphones too.

“They can’t hear me”: what to check

Most “they can’t hear me” problems come down to one of four things: the browser was never allowed to use the microphone; it is listening to a different input than you think (a monitor, or a headset that is unplugged); another app such as Zoom, Teams or Discord is holding the microphone; or a headset has a hardware mute switch.

Run the test. If the bar stays flat, the steps below cover each case.

Chrome and Edge

Click the icon to the left of the web address, open the site settings and set Microphone to Allow, then reload. To choose which microphone the browser uses by default, open chrome://settings/content/microphone (edge://settings/content/microphone in Edge).

Safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad

On a Mac, open Safari → Settings → Websites → Microphone and set this site to Allow. On iPhone and iPad, tap “aA” in the address bar → Website Settings → Microphone → Allow. While it is set to Ask, Safari asks again on each visit.

Firefox

Click the microphone or permissions icon in the address bar, remove the block and reload. Firefox may list only the default microphone until you allow access once; after that, every input appears in the list.

Fix a blocked microphone on your device

How to fix on Windows

  1. Click the site information or permissions icon next to the URL and set Microphone to Allow for this site.
  2. Open Windows Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
  3. Turn on "Microphone access" and "Let apps access your microphone", then enable your specific browser.
  4. Close any other app using the microphone (Teams, Zoom, Discord), then reload Hyallo.

How to fix on macOS

  1. Click the site information or permissions icon next to the URL and set Microphone to Allow for this site.
  2. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
  3. Enable your browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox) in the list. macOS will prompt you to quit and reopen the browser.
  4. Reopen Hyallo and run the test again.

How to fix on Linux

  1. Click the site information or permissions icon next to the URL and set Microphone to Allow for this site.
  2. Open your sound settings (PulseAudio / PipeWire / pavucontrol) and confirm an input device is selected and not muted.
  3. Make sure your browser is allowed to use the input — some sandboxed browsers (Snap/Flatpak) need an extra portal permission.
  4. Reload Hyallo and run the test again.

How to fix on Android

  1. Tap the lock (or info) icon next to the URL in Chrome's address bar.
  2. Tap Permissions → Microphone → set to Allow.
  3. If still blocked, open Android Settings → Apps → Chrome → Permissions → Microphone → Allow.
  4. Make sure no other app (phone call, recorder, voice assistant) is using the mic, then reload Hyallo.

How to fix on iPhone / iPad (Safari)

  1. Tap the "aA" button on the left of Safari's address bar.
  2. Tap Website Settings → Microphone → Allow.
  3. If still blocked, open iOS Settings → Safari → Microphone, and confirm hyallo.com is allowed.
  4. Quit Safari fully (swipe up in app switcher), reopen Hyallo and run the test again.

Frequently asked questions

Is this microphone test private?

Yes. The audio is analysed inside your browser to draw the level bar and is never recorded, stored or sent to our servers. Stopping the test or leaving the page turns the microphone off.

Why does the bar stay flat when I allowed the microphone?

The browser is probably listening to a different input. Choose your headset or built-in microphone in the list, check the mute switch on your headset, and close apps like Zoom, Teams or Discord that may be holding the microphone.

Why doesn’t my browser ask for microphone permission?

It asked before and was told to block. Browsers remember that choice for each site, so the prompt does not come back until you reset it in the site settings (see the steps for your browser above).

Can I choose which speaker plays the sound?

If your browser supports it, yes: pick the output before playing the test tone. Where it doesn’t (Safari and most phones), sound plays through the system output, which you change in your system sound settings.

Do I need to install anything to call from the browser?

No. A recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari can place calls with Hyallo on a computer or a phone. If this test passes, your microphone is ready for a call.
