How to call your US bank from abroad (card blocked, fraud alert, lost card)
A card that works at home can be declined the moment you pay in another country: an unfamiliar location or merchant looks like fraud to the bank’s systems, so it pauses the card or sends a fraud alert. The fix is often a two-minute call - if you can reach the bank from where you are.
Try the app first
Most US banks let you confirm a flagged purchase, lock or unlock a card, and message support inside their app. If that solves it, you don’t need to call at all. Call when the app can’t: a card that stays blocked, a lost or stolen card, a disputed charge, or an account locked after failed sign-ins.
Find the right number (and only the right number)
- Use the number printed on the back of your card, or the one on your bank’s official website. Many banks list a separate number for customers calling from outside the US.
- The main number is often a 1-800-style toll-free line, which usually won’t connect from a foreign phone (see our toll-free guide below).
- The overseas number may accept collect calls, but placing a collect call needs an operator service that many mobile plans and hotels no longer offer.
- Never call a number from an unexpected text, email or pop-up, even if it looks like your bank. Hang up and call the number on your card instead.
Call the bank from your browser
With Hyallo you open a browser tab on your laptop or phone, type the bank’s number with +1, and call over Wi-Fi or mobile data - no US SIM, no roaming. Regular US numbers start at $0.02/min and toll-free lines cost $0.02/min, so a long hold stays cheap. The in-call keypad handles the phone menu and entering your card number when the system asks for it.
What about SMS codes and caller ID?
- Hyallo only makes outgoing calls: it has no incoming number and can’t receive the SMS codes banks send. Keep your US SIM able to receive texts, or switch to app-based verification before you travel.
- The bank verifies you with security questions, not by the number you call from. If you want them to see the phone number on your account, you can add it as your caller ID in Hyallo after a one-time code sent to that number (available once you have bought credit).
- Real bank staff don’t ask for your PIN or your online-banking password. If someone does, hang up.
Before your next trip
- Save the bank’s overseas number in your contacts in +1 format.
- Turn on app notifications so you can approve flagged purchases in seconds.
- If your bank still offers travel notices in the app, set one.
- Carry a second card from a different bank in case one gets blocked.

Frequently asked questions
How do I call my US bank if my phone has no service abroad?
Connect to Wi-Fi or use a data eSIM, open Hyallo in your browser and dial the bank’s number with +1. The call runs over the internet, so your phone plan isn’t involved.
Can Hyallo receive my bank’s verification text?
No. Hyallo is outgoing calls only, with no SMS and no incoming number. Codes still go to the phone number registered with your bank.
How much does a call to my bank cost?
Toll-free lines cost $0.02/min and regular US numbers start at $0.02/min. You pay per started minute, unanswered calls are free, and your first 1-minute call costs nothing.
