How to call Mexico from the US or abroad: the 10-digit format
If you learned to call Mexico before 2019, most of what you remember no longer applies. On August 3, 2019 Mexico’s telecom regulator (IFT) moved the whole country to 10-digit numbers and dropped the extra prefixes. The good news: calling Mexico is now simpler than it has ever been.
The format: +52 and 10 digits
- Mexico’s country code is +52.
- Every number - landline or mobile - has 10 digits: the area code (lada) plus the local number.
- Big cities have 2-digit ladas: 55 Mexico City, 33 Guadalajara, 81 Monterrey. The rest have 3 digits, e.g. 998 Cancún, 664 Tijuana, 222 Puebla.
- Landlines and mobiles are dialed exactly the same way: +52 55 1234 5678.
What changed in 2019 (and what to stop dialing)
- No more 044 or 045 before mobile numbers.
- No more 01 for long-distance calls inside Mexico.
- No more "1" after +52 for mobiles. Contacts saved as +52 1 55… are the old format - delete the 1.
Dialing from the US, from other countries, or with Hyallo
- From a US or Canadian landline: 011 + 52 + the 10 digits (011 52 55 1234 5678).
- From most other countries: 00 + 52 + the 10 digits. From Brazil, your carrier’s code goes in between (e.g. 00 21 52…).
- From a mobile or with Hyallo: just type +52 and the 10 digits - the + replaces any exit code.
Two more practical notes. Mexican 800 numbers are toll-free only inside Mexico and often don’t accept calls from abroad, so look for the company’s regular number. And mind the clock: Mexico has four time zones and most of the country stopped using daylight saving time in 2022 (some border cities still follow the US schedule), so the gap with you can change during the year.
