How to call Denmark (+45) and the other Nordic countries

The Nordic countries look alike on a map, but their phone numbers follow two different systems. Denmark, Norway and Iceland use closed numbering: one fixed-length number, no area codes, nothing to add or remove. Sweden and Finland use a leading 0 at home that you drop from abroad. Get that one detail right and your call goes through the first time.

Denmark: +45 and eight digits

  • Denmark’s country code is +45.
  • Every number, landline or mobile, has exactly 8 digits, usually written in pairs: +45 XX XX XX XX.
  • There are no area codes and no trunk 0. A Copenhagen number is dialed the same way as one in Aarhus, so don’t add a 0 after +45.
  • You can’t reliably tell a mobile from a landline by its first digits, because numbers move between operators. The rate shown before you dial is for the exact number you typed.
  • Numbers starting with 80 are freephone lines and 90 are premium-rate services. Premium-rate numbers aren’t eligible for the free first call.

Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland at a glance

  • Sweden (+46): drop the leading 0. Stockholm 08-123 456 becomes +46 8 123 456; a mobile 070-123 45 67 becomes +46 70 123 45 67.
  • Norway (+47): like Denmark, 8 digits with no area codes and no 0 to drop. Mobiles start with 4 or 9.
  • Finland (+358): drop the leading 0. Helsinki 09 is +358 9; mobiles 040 or 050 become +358 40 or +358 50.
  • Iceland (+354): 7 digits, no area codes, nothing to drop.

Time zones

Denmark, Sweden and Norway are on Central European Time (UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer). Finland is one hour ahead of them (UTC+2, UTC+3 in summer). Iceland stays on UTC all year and doesn’t change its clocks. Offices across the region tend to open early and close by mid-afternoon, and many close earlier on Fridays, so call in their morning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the area code for Copenhagen?

There isn’t one. Denmark has no area codes: dial +45 and the 8-digit number, wherever in Denmark it is.

How do I call a Danish mobile from abroad?

The same way as a landline: +45 followed by the 8 digits, with nothing in between.

Do I keep the 0 when calling Sweden or Finland?

No. The 0 is only for calls inside those countries. From abroad, dial +46 or +358 and then the number without its leading 0.

Is the first call to Denmark free?

Your first 1-minute call is free for destinations up to $0.50/min, which covers ordinary Danish landlines and mobiles but not premium-rate numbers.
